Lentils - Masoor Dal

  • 2/3 cups lentils
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • pinch turmeric
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 Tbsp cilantro (chopped)
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 jalapeno (minced)
  • 5 tsp butter


  1. Wash lentils. Put the lentils, half the onion, chili powder and the coriander into a large saucepan of water and bring to a boil. Simmer gently until lentils are cooked, about 20 to 30 minutes. Skim the froth off as needed.
  2. Heat the butter and fry the other half of the onion and with the turmeric and cumin. Add the fried onion to the lentils. Garnish with the cilantro and jalapeno.
