Tex-Mex Tacos

Here's a great way to serve tacos: The accompaniments are set in bowls and each person adds to their taco whatever they personally like. This was a family favorite when I was growing up.

  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey meat
  • 1 garlic clove (minced)
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 package hard shell or soft tortillas

Optional accompaniments

  • 1 head lettuce shredded
  • 3 tomatoes diced
  • 1-2 cups cheese shredded
  • 2 cups salsa your favorite kind
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 lime wedges
  • 1 cup green onions chopped
  • 1/2 cup cilantro chopped
  • 2 cups beans


  1. Preheat a skillet to medium-high. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, for 1 minute. Stir in the garlic, chili powder, oregano and cumin; season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until the meat is browned, about 5 minutes. Add 1/2 cup water, turn the heat to medium-low and simmer until the liquid is reduced by about half, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and cover to keep warm.
  2. Place meat and all of the various accompaniments in bowls make the tacos, Each person can spoon their favorites into each tortilla and top with the desired accompaniments.
